AimPutt guide

How to use your AimPutt

Two sides, two jobs. One side trains your start line. The other turns pace into a number. Here's how to set up each side, what the numbers mean, and the three drills that matter most.

The two sides

Flip the bar to switch drills.

AimPutt is a 36" bar of 6061-T6 aluminum with a different job on each side.

The AimPutt start-line side: inch marks with a center line

Start-line side

Trains a square face and a straight stroke.

Inch marks with a center line down the middle. The ball rolls along the bar on the center line; the line also shows your putter the path to follow.

The AimPutt distance side: dashed start lines and distance marks in feet

Distance side

Turns pace into a number you can repeat.

Four dashed lines at one end, then distance marks in feet. Your backswing length decides how far the ball rolls.

What the numbers mean

Swing back to a number. The ball rolls about that far.

Each number on the distance side is a distance in feet. It tells you how far back to take your putter to roll the ball that far. Take the putter face back to the 3' mark and the ball rolls about 3 feet. Take it to 20' and it rolls about 20 feet.

Always measure to the putter face, starting from the dashed lines. Keep the same rhythm on every putt and let the backswing length do the work. That's what makes pace repeatable instead of a guess.

On the start-line side, the numbers are inches. Use them to see how long your stroke is, and the center line to keep it straight.

Putter face starts on the dashed lines and swings back along the bar to the 20 foot mark, so the ball rolls about 20 feetTARGET ←3'10'20'30'50'100'Backswing to 20'= the ball rolls about 20 feet
Schematic, not to scale. Your bar has more marks than shown here.

Setup

Thirty seconds to set up either side.

Start-line side

  1. 1Lay the bar flat, start-line side up (the inch marks and center line).
  2. 2Point it straight at your target: a hole, a tee or a coin, 6 to 10 feet away.
  3. 3Set the ball on the center line at the near end of the bar.
  4. 4Roll it so it rides the center line the full length of the bar and rolls off the far end toward the target.

Distance side

  1. 1Flip the bar to the distance side (the dashed lines and the foot marks).
  2. 2Lay it along your target line so the dashed end points at the target and the numbers run back toward you.
  3. 3Set the ball just in front of the four dashed lines.
  4. 4Rest your putter face on the dashed lines. That's your starting point.
  5. 5Take the putter back along the bar until the face reaches the mark for your distance, then stroke through. The ball rolls off the rail toward the target.

Two short videos: one for each side of the bar.

Top 3 drills

The three drills that make you a better putter.

Start line first, then pace. Do these and you're training the two things that decide every putt.

  1. 1

    The Start-Line Gate

    Start-line side

Start every putt exactly on your line.

    Setup

Start-line side up, aimed at a target 6 to 10 feet away. Push two tees into the ground just past the far end of the bar, a little wider than a ball apart. That's your gate.

    Do it

    1. Ball on the center line at the near end of the bar.
    2. Roll it along the center line, off the end and through the gate.
    3. Make 10 in a row. Miss once and start the count again.

    What it tells you

Ball falls off the right side or clips the right tee: the face was open at impact. Left side: the face was closed. (For a right-handed golfer; flip it for lefties.) If it rides the line all the way and splits the gate, your face and path are square.

  2. 2

    Calibrate Your Numbers

    Distance side

Learn exactly how your stroke and your green match the marks.

    Setup

Distance side, on a flat part of the green (or your mat). Ball in front of the dashed lines, putter face on the dashed lines.

    Do it

    1. Roll 3 balls with your backswing to the 10' mark. Pace off where they stop.
    2. Do the same at the 20' and 30' marks.
    3. Note the difference, for example "my 20' rolls about 23 feet here."

    What it tells you

The marks are a starting point: green speed, slope and surface all change the roll. Fast green? Go a little shorter than the number. Slow green or thick carpet? A little longer. Recheck whenever you practice on a new surface.

  3. 3

    The Distance Ladder

    Distance side

Finish every lag close enough for an easy tap-in.

    Setup

Distance side. Set three targets (tees or coins) at 10, 20 and 30 feet. Around each one, picture a circle one putter-length wide.

    Do it

    1. Backswing to the 10' mark and roll to the first target. Then 20', then 30'.
    2. Come back down the ladder: 30', 20', 10'.
    3. Any ball outside its circle means you repeat that rung.

    What it tells you

Only the backswing length changes; the rhythm stays the same. Count "one" on the way back and "two" through, at every distance. Short putts that come up short usually mean you decelerated; long ones usually mean you added a hit at the bottom.

Your 15-minute routine

Fifteen focused minutes beats an aimless hour.

Run this before a round or a few times a week at home.

  1. 0–2 minCalibration check: 2 balls at the 20' mark. Adjust for today's surface.
  2. 2–7 minStart-Line Gate: 10 in a row through the gate.
  3. 7–14 minDistance Ladder: 10' → 20' → 30' and back down.
  4. 14–15 minFinish with one more round of 5 through the gate, so you leave with a made putt.

Questions

Good to know

Are the distances exact?

They're close on an average-speed green, and they're designed to be a starting point. Your stroke, the green speed and the slope all change the roll, which is why the Calibrate drill comes first.

Where exactly do I measure the backswing?

To the putter face. Take the putter back until the face reaches the mark for your distance.

Can I use it indoors?

Yes. Both sides work on carpet or a putting mat. Carpet and mats roll at a different speed than grass, so run the Calibrate drill on that surface first.

Which side should I start with?

Start-line side first. A putt that starts off line can't be saved by good pace. Once the ball rides the center line consistently, add the distance side.
